Types of Essays

This is for the students who just found out that their teacher asked them to write a specific type of essay and still have doubts on deciding which one to do.


Basic explanation of the most common types of essays:

Expository Essay: gives directions on how something is done.

Persuasive or Argumentative Essay: makes a claim or states a position where you back it up with real evidence.

Comparison and Contrast Essay: where one debates the differences and similarities between two situations or topic.

Narrative Essay: it tells a story in a sequence of events, where it would lead to a lesson or an idea to be learned by the reader.

Cause and Effect: it focuses on a situation (the cause) and the consequences that leads to the result (the effect).
